CAREER OPPORTUNITIES FOR PHARMACY GRADUATES

Pharmacy being the healthcare field provides the opportunity in various sectors. Pharmacists are not only employed in the pharmaceutical industry but also get an opportunity to work in the government sector, allied industries, IT industries, research organizations, etc. Reading this blog will help students understand opportunities after graduation in Pharmacy.

A. Pharmaceutical Industry

  1. Pharmaceutical Scientist / Research & Development

A drug discovery process involves a variety of steps that need expertise from the pharmacy as well as allied science domains. Pharmacists needs to be well trained to work on every step of drug discovery. Pharmacist can work on every step from drug synthesis to formulation development.

  1. Formulation & Development

The pharmacist is responsible for the development of new products, process systems and formulations.  Patient needs variety of formulations from simple tablets/capsules to genetically modified/biotechnologically synthesized special formulations. Every drug is delivered to the patient by converting it into a suitable formulation. Pharmacist can convert the biologically active drugs into the therapeutically administrable formulation.

  1. Quality Assurance / Quality Control

The QA / QC officer is responsible for developing, implementing, reviewing, and maintaining quality standards for partially or fully processed materials. Large scale manufacturing has developed the need to ensure the quality of each formulation. Pharmacists works hard to maintain the quality of products. In layman language, we can say that if 10,00,000 tablets are produced, then all of these are of equal standard and will show the same effect on patients.

Analytical Research & Development

Analytical research and development include preliminary research, stability, and degradation studies of drugs and finished products. Pharmacists work here to ensure the proper method of analysis to get reproducibility in terms of pharmacological effect.


Sales / Marketing / Product management

The pharmacist is responsible for increasing sales by searching for existing and potential sellers. Pharmacist must aid in placing orders by referring to price lists and product documentation. Pharmacists working in the field can also recommend changes in product, supply chain, distribution policies and improvements to be made in them.

 

 .      Regulatory Affairs

With growing globalization pharmaceutical industries have tremendously increased their product line and started exporting worldwide. Whenever product needs to be exported, it needs a set of documents for getting legal permission from the country. Regulatory affairs department take care of filing the product for getting necessary permission and license of products. Regulatory bodies like USFDA, TGA, CDSCO, WHO, etc. have their own set of procedure and guidelines for manufacturing of pharmaceutical products. Pharmacists being expert in medicine is required at various levels in these departments.

     
Pharmacy Business

     Registered pharmacist is the only authorized person to handle the medicines.  At different level of pharmaceutical business pharmacist works in import, export, distribution and sales of medicines. The activity can be carried out from small medical shop business to registered company working exclusively in import and export. Depending on one’s potential and investment there is tremendous scope for pharmacist here as medicines are not luxury but essential products.

B. Government Sector

Varieties of positions are available in various government departments. Pharmacists are hired in various government hospitals operated by local municipal corporation, district bodies, state and central government. Pharmacist can apply for positions like Drug Inspector, Assistant Drug Inspector, and Government Analyst etc. Many central organizations like CDSCO, Indian Pharmacopeia commission and Patent office require pharmacist having expertise in relevant fields.

C. Upcoming Sectors

  1. Medical Writing

The medical writer works with clinicians, scientists, and other experts in the field. The pharmacist is involved in creating documents that effectively and clearly describe the research results of patient data, product use, and other medical information. This medical data is useful to enhance the overall therapy of patients.

 

  1. Medical Coding

This sector is growing with increasing penetration of health insurance. Medical coding is the transformation of healthcare diagnostics, procedures, medical services and devices into universal medical alphanumeric codes. Diagnosis and procedure codes are taken from medical records such as transcripts of physician records, laboratory and radiological results. Medical coding specialists help ensure that codes are used correctly in the billing process for medical services, including retrieving information from records, assigning appropriate codes and creating insurance entitlements.

 

  1. Clinical Research

The clinical researchers collect and organize data from clinical research and trials. Pharmacist compiles and analyses these results to obtain productive data giving exhaustive information related to medical devices and procedures.

 

  1. Drug / Medicine Safety

The Drug Safety Officer is responsible for monitoring and evaluating the safety of medicines and the prevention of side effects in patients. He / she must distinguish and analyze the risk / benefit ratio of a drug sold in the pharmaceutical sector. An efficacious drug without safety is nothing but poison for humans.

 

  1. Pharmacovigilance

Monitoring the drug ADR, Side effects and its post marketing surveillance are the major job profiles for pharmacist working in this sector. Many multinational corporations like TCS, Cognizant, Sciformix, and Syntel employ large number of pharmacy graduates in this sector.

D. Higher Studies

Post-graduation in Pharmacy, PhD in Pharmacy and MBA in Pharmaceutical management are higher education opportunities that expand the horizons for pharmacy graduates.
