B.PHARMACY CURRICULUM AT A GLANCE

Pharmacy is the science or practice of the preparation & dispensing of medicinal drugs. Pharmacy course is considered as backbone of healthcare field because it involves drug design, synthesis, formulation & development, manufacturing and uses of medicaments. A pharmaceutical drug or medicine is a chemical substance used to treat, cure, prevent or diagnose a disease.

Pharmacist is a health care professional engaged in dispensing prescription drugs, monitoring drug interactions, storage of medicines and patient counseling. Pharmacist plays a role as mediator between doctor & patient.

  1. B. Pharmacy is a 4-year full-time undergraduate course that is divided into 8 semesters. Pharmacy curriculum comprises of main 4 core subjects- Pharmaceutical chemistry (synthetic & analytical), Pharmacology, Pharmaceutics & Pharmacognosy.

    B. Pharmacy course is regulated by the pharmacy council of India (PCI), a statutory body under the ministry of health & family welfare. PCI regulates the pharmacy education & practice of pharmacy in India. B. Pharm course syllabus is framed by PCI. All pharmacy subjects are concerned with enrichment of healthcare, medical as well as engineering knowledge. Link for syllabus –PCI SYLLABUS.  

    Pharmaceutics is the study of the formulation & development of drugs into a suitable dosage form. This department involves the manufacturing and evaluation of dosage forms. Variety of dosage forms like tablet, capsule, injectable & ophthalmic.

    Pharmaceutical chemistry involves drug discovery, design, synthesis & its analysis. Advanced analytical techniques like chromatography and spectroscopy, conventional titration, and instrumentation are taught to students.

Pharmacology is the branch of medicine which deals with study of drug & medication action & their effect on living systems. It mainly studies absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion and mechanism of action of medicines on human body. Details of anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology are taught to students so that they understand the action of drugs on body.

Pharmacognosy is concerned with the study of crude drugs produced from natural sources such as plants, microbes, animals & marine. In depth knowledge of plant morphology, chemical nature and its action on body is necessary to explore use of plants in therapy. It also comprises study of alternative system of medicines like ayurveda, siddha, homeopathy & unani system.

Syllabus weightage is equally given to theory & practical, so students are made technically sound, skilled and possess thorough subject knowledge. Throughout academic year students are exposed to various allied programs like personality development, computer advanced courses, industrial training & research projects.

Students are encouraged to attend seminars, workshop, conference & training programs which make them acquainted with current market scenario. Students are motivated to participate in Co-curricular and Extra-curricular activities. Efforts are also taken on sports, cultural & social campaigns to ensure all round development of students.
